General Information:

In the Web 2.0, a growing amount of multimedia content is being shared
on Social Networks. Due to
the dynamic and ubiquitous nature of this content (and associated
descriptors), new interesting
challenges for indexing, access, and search and retrieval have
arisen.In addition, there is a growing
concern on privacy protection, as a lot of personal data is being
exchanged. Teenagers (and even
younger kids), for example, require special protection applications;
while adults are willing to have a
higher control over the access to content.
Furthermore, the integration of mobile technologies with the Web 2.0
applications is also an interesting
area of research that needs to be addressed; not only in terms of
content protection, but also
considering the implementation of new and enriched context-aware
applications.
Finally, social multimedia is also expected to improve the performance
of traditional multimedia
information search and retrieval approaches by contributing to bridge
the semantic gap.
The integration of these aspects, however, is not trivial and has
created a new interdisciplinary area
of research.
In any case, there is a common issue that needs to be addressed in all
the previously identified
social multimedia applications: the interoperability and extensibility
of their applications. Thus, the
workshop is particularly interested in research contributions based on
standards.

Contributions:
===========
We invite the following types of contributions:
Research Papers:
Papers should describe original and significant work in the research
and industrial practice of
related topics:
(i) Long papers: up to 8 pages, will normally be particularly focused
on research studies,
applications and experiments
(ii) Short papers: up to 4 pages, will be particularly suitable for
reporting work-in-progress,
interim results, or as a position paper submission.
Applications and Industrial Presentations:
Proposals for presentations of applications and tools, including
reports on the application
and utilisation of tools, industrial practices and models, or tool/
system demonstrations.
Abstract: 2 pages.
All submissions and proposals are to be in English and submitted in
PDF format at the WISMA paper
submission website on or before 28th February 2010. Papers should be
formatted according to LNCS style.
The workshop proceedings are to be published as a volume at CEUR
Workshop Proceedings.

Professor position in Multimedia at EURECOM
ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR POSITION IN MULTIMEDIA AT EURECOM
The Multimedia Communications Department of EURECOM invites applications
for a faculty position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. The
new faculty is expected to participate in teaching in our Master program
and to develop a new research activity in
Ambient Multimedia.
We are especially interested in research directions which may extend our
existing activities in audio and video analysis towards pioneering new
approaches to interaction between people and their environment, in
everyday life or professional situations, for better productivity,
security, healthcare or entertainment.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in computer science or electrical
engineering and between 5 and 10 years of research experience after PhD.
The ideal candidate will have an established research track record at
the international level, and a proven record of successful collaboration
with academic and industrial partners in national and European programs
or equivalent. A strong commitment to excellence in research is
mandatory. Exceptional candidates may be considered at the senior level.
Screening of applications will begin in January, 2010, and the search
will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send, by
email, a letter of motivation, a resume including a list of their
publications, the names of 3 referees and a copy of their three most
important publications, to:

systems founded in 1992 by EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology,

partners. EURECOM's activity includes research and graduate teaching in
corporate, multimedia and mobile communications. EURECOM currently has a
faculty of 20 professors, 200 Master students and 60 PhD students.
EURECOM is involved in many European research projects and joint
collaborations with industry. EURECOM is located in Sophia-Antipolis, a
major European technology park for telecommunications research and
development in the French Riviera.

Mathias Lux's visit + talk at FAU
I'm happy to announce that Professor Mathias Lux from Klagenfurt University (Austria) will visit FAU next week. He is a world renowned expert in the fields of multimedia annotation, search, and retrieval, particularly semantic aspects of multimedia metadata.
He will present an IEEE Signal Processing Society Palm Beach Section Seminar on "User Intentions in Multimedia ("The Other End of the Camera")", on Tuesday (December 8), 10:45 AM, room ED 119 (College of Education building -- Northwest side of the Boca Raton campus).

Multimedia Metadata Community
During WIAMIS 2008 I had the pleasure of meeting with the folks behind the Multimedia Metadata Community. I attended to most lectures of the 8th Workshop of the Multimedia Metadata Community (one of the special sessions within WIAMIS 2008) and joined the group discussions during the community meeting on Friday.
I thank Mathias Lux, Ralf Klamma, Michael Granitzer, Marc Spaniol, Romulus Grigoras, and Vincent Charvillat, among many others, for welcoming me into the community. I look forward to being part of some the great upcoming developments (events, projects, dissemination and collaboration initiatives) that the group outlined during the past few days.
